You will travel over some beautiful Arctic tundra around little lakes and small hills for about 2.5 hours. Once you arrive in Tuk we will give you a village tour and include a stop at the ocean for a dip. You will also receive a nice certificate for going into the ocean. Inuvik airport pick-up and drop-off is included in this tour if you are flying in and heading straight to Tuktoyaktuk and back the same day although we do not recommend squeezing this full day trip into half a day. Morning runs with a kennel tour start at 8:30 am and finish at about 9:30 am. You will be riding in one of our 2 side-by-side ATV Quads while 8 huskies are running ahead hooked up to the ATV. All seats are comfortable and have seat belts and we can take 3 people plus driver on each ATV. This is how we exercise our huskies almost every morning (or sometimes in the afternoon if it's a cool day,) so why not come along and watch the show! This is also a great photo opportunity so be sure to bring your camera. After the run you will get to visit our kennels and meet all the dogs. Our dogs are friendly and affectionate. Just call us the night before to book your spot and come to the Arctic Chalet office at 25 Carn Street the next morning. You will still have time to drive to Tuktoyaktuk after this early morning tour!
2 hour tour of Inuvik
$75-100 per person
This is probably the most interesting city tour you will ever take (that's what people tell us). This tour includes seeing the inside of the igloo church, the visitor's centre and possibly the Inuvik community greenhouse. Inuvik is unique and special in that the whole town is built totally on permafrost. On this tour you get a lot of information from your guide about the people, the land, aboriginal land claim agreements, the climate, building methods, the water, heat and sewer systems that make such a town work in this extreme environment, and much more. You can drive around yourself but you will not understand a lot of what you are seeing. This tour is highly informative.

If we can book a larger group of at least 3 people, you can spend one hour on the ground giving you enough time to hire a taxi cab and explore the town if you wish. Then you fly back to Inuvik. Our flying tours give you a scenic flight and the best ground tour ever in Tuk. Our guide doesn't just talk about Inuvialuit traditions, she lives them and will share her knowledge with you.
Here is what you can expect:
Your guide will meet you at the Tuk airport and give you a driving tour of the village. You will see North America's largest Pingo, Ibyuk, the Pingo Canadian Landmark. You can also get a photo of yourself by the Arctic Ocean sign. The highlight will be dipping your toe, feet or whole body into the Arctic Ocean for which you get a certificate. Your guide will also show you her smoke house on the shoreline as well as her traditional tent where her husband will show you the polar bear pants which he wore on many hunting trips. You will see other clothing made from traditional furs and see antlers and horns from animals that they harvested out on the land. Then your driver will drive you back to Inuvik on the new Inuvik Tuktoyaktuk highway. There will be interpretive stops along the way and some great photo opportunities on the Arctic Tundra.
Important notice:
Sorry, but unfortunately, the ice house in Tuk has been closed to all tourists, most likely due to liability issues for the hamlet. So do not expect to visit the underground ice house on any visit to Tuk. Some web sites have not been updated with this information.

You will be flying a very scenic route for about 1.5 hours each way in a twin otter airplane on tundra tires from Inuvik to this beautiful little island in the Beaufort Sea. This flight offers you a great opportunity to view a variety of wild life along the way, such as moose feeding in the Mackenzie Delta, caribou grazing near the coast, beluga whales swimming in the ocean as well as grizzly bears and even muskox, some of which have been living right on the Island for several summers. Upon landing you will be met by the park rangers who will give you a brief tour of the historical buildings reminiscent of the days when Herschel Island was a center for hunting the bow head whales. This is not only a place of historical value; it is a paradise for nature lovers and bird watchers. The bird life is incredible with many birds nesting close to the buildings in early summer. Plants and wildflowers grow lusciously in this special environment which is conducive to plant growth. You will be given 3-4 hours to explore the island before returning to Inuvik. All in all the tour is about 7 hours. Group size is 6-15 people. We can add you to our ongoing list of HERSCHEL ISLAND dreamers!
